The screams are all silenced to the pounding in my head- fear, panic, guilt, and shock all battle within me. In the moving mass of chaos I stand still. My eyes still look above to where the GM had been floating not but seconds before. For the second time since being in this world, another body crashes into mine, disturbing me from my trance, and this time not even an apology. It is then that I notice an unfamiliar beeping sound in my ear, and there is a green light at the corner of my vision. I reach out to touch it with my hand, opening up a message screen saying “meet me here” attached to a map with Kaibo’s username over a beacon.
I exhale a breath I didn't even know I was holding, feeling a bit of relief at still seeing his name. It looks like he’s somewhere in a nearby alley. I plot my coordinates and then bring up my user interface to take a quick look through my short list of friends. My anxiety passes over me and I exit from the interface. My body itches to move. I gulp at the air and remind myself to breathe as I take my first few steps, ignoring the twisted feeling in my gut. I force myself to ignore the fact that any moment I could lose my friends, or disappear from this world, never to return home. I force myself to keep moving towards Kaibo’s location.
I discover the group in a darkened alleyway. I silently approach and upon noticing my friend I call his name. “Kaibo.”

There wasn't long to wait before I had my answer. Still, I spent a few minutes trying to find a way around the log out problem. There had to be an emergency log out thing. Had to be... but after a few minutes of scrolling I found nothing. Nothing that jumped out at me anyway. I could feel the tickle in the back of my brain. The part of me that was good at solving problems. The part that always told me when I was overlooking or forgetting something.
I couldn't for, for the life of me, remember what it was. It turns out "for the life of me" was a poor choice of words. Only moments after the thought had passed me by a dark robed figure appeared in the sky and informed us all this was a game of death and we had no choice but to play it. The small, worst case scenario, fear that had been building inside me was now realized. Then the screaming started. I was suddenly lost in a sea of faces. All of them in some state of terrified.
I was trapped, too numb to be terrified. Something like this couldn't be real. Couldn't actually be happening. I thought it would go on forever. Myself caught in a tide of people, running and screaming. Then I saw it, or him... or them, I should say. Their faces were not masks of fear.
You could see it, the weight of the situation in their bodies. On their shoulders perhaps, but they moved with a purpose. It was like a beacon, a lifeline to my drowning self. I felt my numbness ebbing away. Felt my fear rising through it, but I trained my eyes on them. Not wanting to lose them in the crowd. Never to see them again.
I can't say exactly what it was that drew me too them. Perhaps in my primal heart I knew people with faces like that could save us, save me. For the first time since the panic had started. I tried to move against the tide of people. It was a nightmare. The mass of bodies was a powerful, surging force that seemed to mock any attempt to navigate it.
It was like, living a dream. The kind where you can't seem to make your feet stick to the ground enough to run. All the while some encroaching sense of doom is descending upon you. Some unknown figment pursuing you. Always about to get you. This was how I felt as I attempted to move, attempted to follow them. Finally I'd had enough. I dug my feet and and leaned into my forward motion with my shoulder. Slowly, slowly... I felt the tide shift. Felt everything beginning to turn and move the way I was trying to go and then I was out.
The crowd spit me out into an empty space. Panic flared for a moment as I realized I'd taken my eyes off my target. I turned my head this way and that as my eyes searched them out. With what was probably the last bit of luck I had left. I saw them turn down an alley and vanish from site. I charged off after them and only just realized I had no idea who they were or what I was going to say.
It turns out I wasn't the only person follow them. Another person, a girl moved down the alleyway. "Kaibo." She said somewhere ahead of me. It was hard to determine if it was a statement or a question. At the very least it was a name. "Hello?" I moved closer, my voice hollow sounding as I greeted all of them. A slight cough to clear my throat. "Hello." with more strength. "I..." What do you say to people you don't know in a crisis? I laughed, out loud. Manic laughter, as it occurred to me. This was no time to be worried about looking stupid. "You all seem to be going somewhere. I'd like to come."
There it was, now if they threw me back to the crowd. I wasn't any worse off then I'd been before. I simply didn't want to die in this game and they didn't look like they planned on doing any dying. There was nothing to lose and something to gain. I stood there, nervously awaiting a response.

Aeschere, unable to accept the "GM's" story rummaged through her inventory without thinking, retrieving the Mirror item that had been placed inside. One by one, the onlookers became enveloped in bright light a moment, Aeschere included. Something had changed though it wasn't obvious to her immediately. Aeschere looked down at her body--his body as it was soon apparent, had apparently change sexes. He reached back with his left hand to feel his hair and it too had changed, no longer long and flowing but short. Remembering the mirror, he looked into to find it was not the character he created but instead his own face.
Screams of terror and confusion echoed within high walls of the plaza though Aeschere himself was silent. It took him a moment for the message to sink in. An almost cold feeling began setting into the back of his mind, a slow fear which started to take hold. Everything had just become very real--the situation, the emotions he was experiencing; it was too much to deal with. Aeschere froze, dropping the mirror which caused it to shatter into tiny trigonal pieces before disappearing entirely.
"Dallas, Chris, Cory--we need to get out of here!" shouted Josh nearby. Still caught up in his own head, Aeschere almost didn't notice. Josh was gesturing for Aeschere to follow and he did, though not entirely sure why. Not that he had any reason to distrust him, Josh and Aeschere were good friends and things were becoming bad fast, but he did not feel he had control of his body any longer--or his mind for that matter. There was a comfort in that small moment where he did not have to think for himself though it became apparent that would not last long.

". . .Players; I wish you the best of luck."
"Well, shit.", I said mildly.
The air suddenly seemed a little colder as I stood on the rough cobblestone of the town square. The happy burbling of the fountain seemed almost supernaturally loud as nearly ten thousand souls collectively held their breath.
One, two., I counted silently.
It was beautiful, in a macabre kind of way. A sea of countless men and women with both eyes locked on the sky in total silence, as if commanded by the obelisk that dominated the heart of the courtyard.
Three, four.
It was an odd thought, and something in the back of my mind began giggling. I immediately turned a mental key and silenced it.
Five.
On the fifth heartbeat I started to move; I'd never hit five before I could move again. I wrenched my head down and to the right as I turned, shouldering passed the stunned man behind me as I picked the first direction I saw and headed that way. I took in as little of people surrounding me as possible as I forced my legs to carry me towards the nearest buildings. Shouldering past one particularly large gentleman I heard the sound of breaking glass, crisp as crystal from some distance behind me.
Seven.
Then came the screaming, pounding at me like a landslide from every direction. I knew the sound, though I wish I didn't. High, undignified. Pure fear. It gets your immediate attention and serves as an excellent warning to be gone quickly and without any footprints behind you so long as you don't recognize the voice. I shifted gears and rolled into a jog. My long legs gave me a nice loping stride that eats distance deceptively quickly and I abused this to it's fullest advantage.
Twelve.
"Dallas, Chris, Cory!", I heard Josh bark from some distance to my left. A quick glance confirmed that he was heading in more less the same direction I was, heading for a small alley a few dozen meters from the house I had selected for my own exodus. His instincts were good and doubtless he had begun moving at the same time as I had. I shifted my direction slightly, juking to the left out of the path of a man who probably never even saw me as he ran.
Twenty-three.
I arrived at the dusty wooden building to the right of the alley at roughly the same time as Josh and the others, dropping my pace to a quick walk as I rounded the bend. Giving Josh a quick nod, I scan the alley quickly. A few figures dart across my vision past the end of the alley, scrambling nowhere in particular. A few more walked around as if completely lost, eyes firmly planted on their feet as they took slow plodding steps.
As I opened my mouth to speak I was cut off by an unfamiliar voice from the mouth of the alley.
"Hello?"
It sounded hesitant, if not a little confused. So quiet I almost wasn't sure I'd heard it correctly. I turned to see a woman standing a few feet behind our little group. I looked at her for a moment, experiencing a rare loss of words. She clears her throat and speaks again, her voice a bit stronger.
"Hello?", she pauses, "I. . ."
She seems to almost break for a moment, barking out a few rather unbalanced sounding peals of laughter. I could almost see the exact second when she regained control of herself, silencing her own inner panic.
"You all seem to be going somewhere. I'd like to come."
"HAH!", I snort to myself. With heaven burning, hell underwater, people screaming from every direction, and almost nobody looking out for themselves she was already trying to survive.
"Keep up.", I say almost automatically. "Everyone needs all the friends they can get right now. I'm Dallas, this is Josh, Chris, and Cory." I pointed to each in turn. "We're going in a general 'that way' kind of direction. Good to have you on board. We're going to make it."
Turning to Josh I say, "When in doubt, move. Plan 0, we need to be somewhere else. Asap."

I turned to look and found a pair of people had followed us into the alleyway. One I recognized as Riah. Thought I knew her face, it was like a shadow of a memory. Not a true recollection of it, having never seen her before with my own eyes. Still, I knew her. I nodded at her, in what I hoped was a reassuring way. My brain was still running to catch up with everything. Probably best if I didn't let it.
"You all seem to going somewhere. I'd like to come."
"Keep up"
I almost smiled, through all of it. This wasn't exactly the first time we'd picked up random people. Dallas and I. I find the phenomenon peculiar, hard to analyze and impossible to prove. Yet we seemed to have a sort of draw to us. Especially where people in some sort of trouble were concerned. Though, for once we all seemed to be in the same trouble. What's more, the phrase "Keep up" was a relic from our past. Not the distant past, just the bit before we'd found ourselves trapped here.
It was a solid reminder that despite our situation. Despite the fact death was a very likely possibility. We were still us. I looked around at everyone. These were my friends. People I'd come to know and love, in a matter of days in some cases. If I had to pick a group of people to face the worst with, these would be it. I reached out and grabbed Chris on the shoulder and gave him a little shake.
"Come on friend. You'll be alright." I did this. I would often feign confidence when I had none. I'd look askance at the odds and laugh. I'd point out to others how the trouble was not nearly so bad as it seemed. In short, I lied. If you can't be good... I thought a little wryly. I stepped clear of all of them, so as to put everyone in my line of sight. "Alright, Dallas is right. Plan 0. Movement is life."
I needed something, a good strong way to tie this up and get us moving. I needed a lie I could tell to make them all believe they'd be okay if they came with me. Truthfully I was torn. I don't like being responsible. I don't like people looking to me for anything. I don't own pets because I don't want to be relied upon. Not even in the smallest way. The thought of even failing to provide a little love and some inexpensive food to another being disturbed me deeply.
This was at odds with the fact, I cared about these people. I wanted to protect them. I didn't want to see any of them die. I had many lackluster qualities. I reiterated these to myself on a daily basis. I knew them well, there shape and weight. How they felt in my mind. I knew however, in this time and place there was no room for false modesty. I can do this.
"From here on out, there is only one speed. Mine." No trace of fear, only a serious calm. They would of course be able to keep up, but perhaps if they could believe that I was strong. I could convince each of them of their own strength. Perhaps. With those words I turned and made for the gate. "Chri- Aeschere." I changed the name midway through. Not entirely sure why. It occured to me I hadn't liked hearing my name in this place. "Aesch" I said again. Using the abbreviation this time.
We passed through the main gate. There were a few people on the road out of town, though they didn't look all that confident about it. "I need a map or something." It was probably stupid of Dal- Ladimore. and I to have run out of town without so much as making an information gathering trip the first time, but I knew Chris had.
"I just need you to point us in the right direction. We need to get well away from..." I waved my hand around. Indicating this general area. "I don't know exactly how S.A.O. compares to other games but if I'm right. We won't be able to level here. I personally have no intention of waiting to be saved." I slogged up the road. My eyes fell on some boars, and now wolves... as twilight fell, turning slowly into true night. death... I realized as I looked at them. Not... just world trash mobs but something that could kill me... I pushed the thought aside. I needed to stay focused. Telling a good lie required focus.

Kaibo took Aeschere by the shoulders and gave him a light shake. The effect the situation had on him was quite obvious to the others. Aeschere blinked. "I need a map or something. I just need you to point us in the right direction." Kaibo asked. Aeschere let out a deep breath and tried to get ahold of himself.
He opened the menu and accessed his personal map. The map itself was perfectly round and void of any features for the majority, appearing as a blue colored grid. The interface only included areas where Aeschere himself had been previously, in this case the Town of Beginnings and the fields directly above it. The town itself was at the very bottom-center of the map, right against it's edge. Aeschere remembered what he had heard from some of the NPCs and townsfolk from earlier in the day, that the first floor of the game had many towns and villages scattered throughout it. With no frame of reference in mind, he couldn't discern where they actually were, however. He moved his finger towards where he and the group were within the town and held it there a moment, visibly shaking as he did so, when a thought came to him.
Aeschere had put 15 points into his Navigation skill at the beginning of the game to help him explore Aincrad. The possession of the skill, although low, was enough to suggest a direction to Aeschere's mind through the NerveGear. "Northwest." Aeschere uttered plainly with a somewhat confused expression. "I...don't know how I know or what it is, but there is something there." Amidst the panic, he had forgotten how the skill worked. His answer was vague, but on a rush and without much time, it was a start. He looked to Kaibo and the others, awaiting a decision.

"keep up"
I had to suppress another bout of manic laughter. "You got it." No one else took any further notice of me, and the one who they called Josh seemed take charge and before long we found ourselves on the roads.
Something about wandering around as the light faded seemed stupid to me, and they didn't seem know exactly where they were headed. I really hoped the plan here was more than just "lets try not to get lost as we escape the safe zone."

"Northwest?"
I pulled my map up. There wasn't a whole lot of useful information there. We were some distance North of the place we'd been killing boars earlier in the day. I rotated the little compass rose in the corner until I faced Northwest. The route was contrary to the road we were on. I frowned into the growing darkness.
My brain was telling it was a bad idea. My gut was telling me it was a bad idea. Not that I was afraid of the dark, but there's a genetic disinclination for wandering around in it for a reason. I looked down the road on which we were traveling. It curved off around a hill somewhere ahead and out of sight. Heading South-South-East. Nearly the opposite direction Chris was saying we should go.
More to the point I had no idea of knowing where the road lead... or if it was even safe to travel on the road at night. We might be just as well off heading in any direction. I simply didn't know what came next. I ran one hand through my hair and sighed. "We're gonna have to move quickly." Making a decision I'll probably regret I step off the road.
No immediate signs of the hellfire my stomach had been promising. Still, I didn't relax in the slightest. I set out at a brisk pace. Swinging wide around small patches of tree's or anything with a deeper darkness, where something might hide. The fields actually seemed somewhat emptier than they had before. I could hear the squeal of a boar off in the distance every now and then but I couldn't see a single animal near us.
Darkness had fallen completley now and a pair of eyes glowed out from some stand of tree's to the west, watching us. I took note but didn't point it out to the others. Doubtless, they were most of them nervous enough without me pointing out every little danger that cropped up. As the thought passed through my head a I saw a flicker of light. "Get down." I whispered as I stopped and ducked down .
The harsh light of flames grew brighter and brighter and then all of the sudden there was a group of things. The emerged into sight from the tree's headed south. I counted at least a dozen, most of them holding torches in one hand and swords with wicked curves that twinkled in the light.
The passed us by some thirty meters distant, our forms shrouded in darkness. I realized I was holding my breath then. My eyes trained on them. They were tall, broad shouldered monsters. Not entirely sure what to make of them. There was only thing I was certain of. They were cut from a different cloth than most things on the first floor.
I was only just now becoming aware of the fact I'd been holding my breath, and some other thought about whether or not, not breathing would eventually have some sort of effect on my health. Then the monsters did something strange. They'd continued moving south until they were directley behind us at which point they stopped.
"We left a trail..." I realized so suddenly I said it out loud. The creatures fanned out, shoulder to shoulder and began marching straight for us. "Run!" and I jumped up. Holding my position until I was sure the others would in fact begin running. My eyes never leaving the group of things...

Kaibo had ordered the group to lay low for the moment as he looked around for any immediate signs of danger. By now Aeschere's senses had, for the most part, come back to him and he realized Kaibo wouldn't have asked such a thing unless he had the suspicion there were something dangerous about. Aeschere rested his hand on the butt of his rapier as he crouched in the tall grass, hoping that if something were to happen, he'd be ready for it.
Aeschere could see the lights some distance away, torches held by persons unknown. Slowly they seemed to get closer to where the group was hiding. "We left a trail," Kaibo said quietly, Aeschere unsure if it was meant for the group or himself, though he realized it's significance. At some point the group had left the road, something traditionally in other games could be considered a safe way to travel from one area to another. An unsettling feeling creeped it's way into the back of Aeschere's mind, and his grip on his rapier tightened. Suddenly Kaibo jumped up from his crouched position and shouted, "Run!" Aeschere did as he was told and darted in the direct opposite of the approaching lights, not knowing what he'd find there and hoping it to be free of danger. He drew his blade and carried it as he ran, attempting to be ready for anything he might find in the dark.

I marched along, behind the others. The wind was becoming cool now that the sun had vanished. I found myself sort of lamenting my choices here. These people suddenly seemed like they'd be the first to die. Sure, everyone back in the Town of Beginnings might be freaking out but at least they were safe.
Out here in these dark fields we were anything but, and it didn't take this world long to prove it.
"Get down"
I dropped low and looked around. It took a little longer to see it. The light of torches. I felt my stomach clench and my shoulders began to shake. Here it was, real danger. I didn't look directly at them. Instead looking at the people around me as they watched. Some faces were hard, with hard and well worn looks on them and I found myself wondering. Had they done this before?
Perhaps it was not the right moment to be curious, but that's when my curiosity was born. What sort of lives had they lived to wear their faces like that. To look out the death that passed so close by us now and not appear afraid. Then there were other faces. Like mine, that showed fear as clean and clear as freshly polished glass.
I tried to stop my shaking, even going so far as to turn my face down and bury it in the grass. I heard a sudden intake of breath.
"We left a trail..."
My eyes snapped open and I turned to look, my eyes finding the beasts as the organized themselves into a living, moving wall. Which began to approach. Frozen in terror it took me a moment to process the voice that told me to Run. I pushed myself to my feet. My body shaking so hard now the simple action was far more difficult than it should have been.
I bolted out, following whoever had run before me. I looked at... Kaibo as we streamed by. His eyes flicking between us and the monsters but holding his ground. I was sure it was his voice that'd ordered us to run. Certainly he didn't mean to stand and fight. Even with all of us... The odds were at least two to one, but no. I realized he was waiting for everyone to move. Not willing to leave any of us behind.

Through the darkness of SAO’s “night”, I notice the glowing eyes of some unknown creature transfixing themselves upon our small group. An involuntary shiver overcomes me as I look away, glancing over at the dark-haired girl named Lyra. Had she noticed? I look over to whom I know to be Chris, and then towards the front of the group, watching Kaibo’s form. Had any of them noticed? I look back to the distant grouping of trees where the glowing orbs had been, only to see nothing but the dark. ‘Maybe it was just a boar...’ I think to myself. Suddenly I hear Kaibo say,
“Get Down.” I crouch down on my knees waiting and fearfully watching with the rest of the group as a mob of flames emerge from the trees beyond us. As the flames approach in the distance I see the large hulking forms of creatures carrying swords. They barely make much noise, stealthily moving in the night. Again I glance around to the others, wondering if they’re as worried about the beasts as I am, though for the time we have not been seen. We blend in with the darkness around us. The light from the torch flames do not reach us. The beasts walk right by us, and I am relieved. For a second I close my eyes and let out a quiet breath, until I hear Kaibo’s voice speak out faintly.
“We left a trail,” he says, and my eyes snap open. The hulking mass of creatures have stopped, only to spread out and advance in our direction. He shouts,
“Run!” as he leaps up from his crouched position. No sense in hiding anymore- it’s all out run for our lives, or die trying.. But as everyone moves I note Kaibo still stands his ground, ever the gallant leader waiting for everyone else to run for safety first. I myself stand there, sword in hand, and wait for him to follow the rest of us.

The sun finally faded over the trees as the first night-bird trilled in the twilight. The wind had steadily cooled over the last half hour or so and it rustled the long grass of the field bringing the scent of earth and growing things strongly to the road. As my eyes flitted about in the growing darkness I took careful note of the edge of the forest as I walked, the hollows beneath the branches already soaked in shadow.
I snorted a bit to myself as my eyes scanned the deep purple color filling the sky as it faded into the deep black settling slowly on the horizon. Quite pretty, really. It was rather disconcerting how quickly the light had faded. We had stopped not twenty minutes ago by my estimation. I'd say it was to get our bearings and rest but I think we all just needed a moment to ourselves after an hour or two of forced marching. The enormity of the situation was starting to catch up to me, probably them as well. I opted out of the intense inner monologue I really wanted to have in favor of ignoring the situation entirely and throwing bits of dried meat at a feral cat hiding behind a stump. It had run off when we'd all moved to leave, but every now and then I'd see it's eyes in the grass to my left.
I snapped back to reality for a moment as Josh spoke, "We're gonna have to move quickly." I swiveled my head slightly to look at him as he stepped off the road and into the grass. We're going off the road?, I thought. This ought to be good. Oh yeah. This is good, I'm sure of it. We barely even slowed down, other than to change our trajectory slightly as we followed Josh's avatar off the road and into the springy grass of the fields. My eyes darted over the stumps, rocks, and mossy growths that peppered the landscape searching for any sign of movement. A small noise from my right foot, however, caught all of my high-strung, stressed out attention and nearly caused me to eject myself from my armor. The tiny orange cat mewed again, the second repetition thankfully not causing any heart attacks. I scowled down at the beast as it skittered a few steps ahead and looked back at me, flicking it's ear as if irritated that I'd stopped. Cursing slightly under my breath I begin walking again, all the while hurling various implications concerning the cats birth at it's twitching tail.
The boredom quickly set in again after the thrill of walking through a field by the woods at night wore off. The six of us kept our heads on a swivel, and conversation low. A few of the others had been walking in small groups, keeping the conversations hushed. I lagged a little behind the group, mostly keeping to myself. A quick glance to my right revealed the cat still trotting along at a steady pace, ears flicking towards me occasionally.
"Have you heard the tale of the Six Silent Shadows?", I asked the cat quietly. It put a few more feet of distance between the both of us at the sound of my voice. I chuckled a bit and began the story under my breath as the cat eyed me suspiciously. I've always talked to animals, and even if the cat wasn't real it was a comfort thing.
"What is the single shade, the shadow, to the limitless veil of night?", I waved my hand theatrically at the starry night sky. "Midst the frenzy of the fight, they were unmatched. The mashing of their cooldowns drowned out only by the lamentations of their enemies. But where are they now, those bold few?"
Eyes were all I could see of the cat now, as it slunk a bit closer. "Some say they have come and gone, as grains of sand in the deserts of time.", I continued briefly before pausing again in what I hoped was a dramatic fashion. "But I know, their tale is just beginning. And with weapons firmly in hand they will carve their names into eternity!"
"Get down!"
Reality came crashing back all at once as I heard Josh's voice. I hit the deck without thinking about it. I've always been of the opinion that the moment you use looking for why a person says 'duck' or 'get down' or 'move' is probably the only moment you have. For that moment all I could see was grass. Grass and a moldy stick. Raising my head slightly I saw the torches off in the distance and sucked in a quick breath. Definitely not players. Too uniform, no armor. The curved blades they carried didn't concern me nearly as much as the numbers. There were at least a dozen of the things that I could see as they slowly swung around us and continued on into the night.
"We left a trail. . ."
He didn't even need to say anything else. My heart skipped about two beats and then kicked back on with a vengeance as the creatures in the dark began to fan out in an obvious attempt to comb the field for us.
"Run!"
I heard the group scramble to it's feet ahead of me as they turned to run. I pushed myself back to my feet with minimal time to waste. Turning quickly a few strides brought me even with Josh's avatar who was staring at the approaching torchlight. I grabbed his arm as I came near, pulling slightly in the opposite direction of the whatever-they-were's.
"We'll have plenty of time for that noble shit later, now move. If or when they catch us. . . then they're a problem."
I began to run.

As I see Ladimore take Kaibo’s arm to drag him away with the rest of our group, I too, begin to run. I think of retrieving my blades for combat, but I know those will just slow me down when the goal is to keep as much distance between me and the approaching monsters as possible. I keep note of everyone in the group, ready to assist if their energy levels weaken. The open darkness before us is daunting, as I am hoping for a sign of refuge. Everything in this world is dangerous now, and those monsters behind us now could end us, but what’s the catch? I wonder why such a misplaced threat would be out here on the first floor of SAO. My eyes dart all around, seeking an answer- this just doesn't seem right. We aren't supposed to end like this.
